Winning Hearts and Minds Without Winning Elections

ryking:

The GOP’s approval numbers hit new lows in both a recent CBS News/New York Times poll and NBC/Wall Street Journal poll.

Guess why the GOP could care less?

It took two months of endless screaming about the deficit to sucker nearly two-thirds of poll respondents into being concerned about the deficit, and wanting the White House to focus on deficit reduction even if doing so prolongs the economy’s (Republican Party-caused) problems.

It took two weeks of smears to trash Nancy Pelosi and cause her approval numbers to plummet, hitting new lows in both the aforementioned polls.

It took less than a week to con more than half of the public into opposing the closing of Gitmo, and roughly three days to turn over half against GM’s bail-out.

The GOP doesn’t have to win high poll numbers or direct control of Congress with another election, at this rate; as an effective opposition party, it’s already setting a fair amount of the public agenda. The GOP is winning hearts and minds without winning elections. Which means America is losing.
