I’ve noticed that none of the usual crazies who announce that natural disasters are the result of God punishing us for, say, health care reform, are suggesting that he’s punishing the Bible Belt with floods and oil spills.
Geezus! The more I learn about what people are doing in the world, the more impulses I have to put a bullet in my head…or go live in a cave solely with non-human animals…or beat the crap out of people.
Option number two seems the most sensible of the three…I’ll start packing.
“Pfizer alone paid almost $3 billion in criminal fines since 2004, yet that was just one percent of their total revenues;
Eli Lilly got busted bribing doctors to prescribe a schizophrenia drug, Zyprexa, to elderly patients suffering from dementia, even though company-run clinical trials showed an alarming death rate of 31 people out of 1,184 participants (double the placebo rate). Whatever—the market for elderly dementia patients meant billions in extra revenues. So Eli Lilly continued pushing Zyprexa on the elderly for another four years until it the Feds busted them. Eli Lilly got hit with $1.42 billion fine, but that was peanuts compared to the $36 billion it earned on Zyprexa sales from 2000-2008.”—
Fuckers are preying on the elderly and infirm who can’t defend or advocate for themselves…talk about “Let’s Kill Grandma”. They make a quick buck (billions of ‘em) and most of the victims are either dead or can’t speak coherently for themselves. Those who are still alive have a small percentage of family members willing to fight for what’s been done, and so the number of people willing and able to fight this kind of shit is dramatically reduced. Who knows what damage was done to them by the drug even if it didn’t kill them? I’ve seen how things work for the elderly with dementia…no one cares and figures they’re better off dying anyway, so they treat them that way. But this is the epitome of human predation. ~whyinthehell
“Allowing openly gay men to be scoutmasters, [Rekers] testified, ‘would legitimize the value of homosexual behavior in the eyes of many of the Boy Scouts … There would be more homosexual conduct or behavior by the boys in such troops.’ And some of them could be setting off down the road toward a homosexual adulthood, he said. Whatever biological component there is to having homosexual urges, homosexual behavior is a ‘preference,’ not an ‘orientation,’ he said — in short, a matter of choice. It’s a choice Rekers clearly considers deeply wrong: As a Southern Baptist, he told the commission, he believes that God destroyed the city of Sodom for allowing homosexuality, as an example to mankind, and that active homosexuals face ‘eternal separation from God’ — in Southern Baptist parlance, the fires of hell.”—American Talibaner and anti-gay activist George Rekers, recetly caught (in case you haven’t heard) employing a gay male prostitute. — Ryking (via ryking)
In a fiery speech on the Senate floor, Russ Feingold conditioned his support for the Wall Street reform measure on adding a multitude of amendments that would break up the mega-banks, cap size and leverage and restore the firewall between commercial and investment banks. He even went so far as to say that he would not vote to end debate on the bill unless these and other serious banking reforms were part of it.
Democrats, with 59 votes, already need the support of at least one Republican to move forward at the end of the process with the bill. It’s likely that Ben Nelson won’t support the final bill, and now Feingold is the first to make the threat from the left to vote against ending debate without real changes to how Wall Street does business.
In the wake of the recent adoption into law of SB1070 by the State of Arizona today (04.23.2010), one of the most draconian anti-immigration laws ever in the United States, many people have called for a boycott of the State of Arizona.
“Let me repeat: you are drilling the world’s deepest oil well, which requires some very specialized technology, yet from a safety and risk standpoint you acted as if this was just any ol’ offshore well. And you claim that you didn’t put “blowout preventers” on these wells because an accident like what we’re seeing “seemed inconceivable”. I repeat: You are doing something that has never been done before and yet in your brilliance an accident was “inconceivable.”—Southern Beale (via azspot) (via ryking)
Various studies, including one by the Federation of Greek Industries last year, have estimated that the government may be losing as much as $30 billion a year to tax evasion — a figure that would have gone a long way to solving its debt problems…
Some of the most aggressive tax evaders, experts say, are the self-employed, a huge pool of people in this country of small businesses. It includes not just taxi drivers, restaurant owners and electricians, but engineers, architects, lawyers and doctors.
“The American Academy of Pediatrics has proposed a “compromise” on female genital cutting, suggesting a “ritual nick,” a minor incision of the clitoris to satisfy the urge to ritualistically disfigure a female child’s genitals in order to control her sexuality. See, this way, people can honor that awesome tradition without actually removing part or all of the genitalia. Everyone gets a little something: Girls get only a little heinous physical and psychological trauma, and their guardians get to practice their violent misogyny, just in a slightly less violent way… Advocating a more minor version of the procedure will almost certainly mean that “mothers who have until now resisted community pressure and not subjected their daughters to FGM in the U.S., in part because of the anti-FGM law, could be forced under the AAP guidelines to ask pediatricians to ‘nick’ their daughters’ clitorises if it is legally permitted.” They are actually robbing mothers, adult women who are under enormous pressure to visit upon their American daughters a trauma they could not avoid, of the best argument they’ve got in their arsenal if they want to shield and protect their daughters.”—
