In the wake of the recent adoption into law of SB1070 by the State of Arizona today (04.23.2010), one of the most draconian anti-immigration laws ever in the United States, many people have called for a boycott of the State of Arizona.

“According to KOLD Channel 5 News in Arizona, local militiaman Bill Davis is recruiting “combat veterans, with kill records, to camp out and patrol” along the U.S.-Mexico border. “If it comes to when shots are fired in the general direction of these guys, they have my authorization to return fire, if they’re in defense of their life or their buddy next to them, return fire, stop it as fast as it starts, and they’re capable of it,” Davis told reporters. Despite a warning from Santa Cruz County Sheriff Tony Estrada that the militia’s plan is “very dangerous” and “very risky,” Davis is pressing forward:
“If we think they’re carrying drugs, weapons, contraband, we’ll get out in front of ‘em and stop ‘em,” says Davis. “They won’t get past us. You can write into that what you want, short of shooting them.”
Davis may be feeling empowered from the radical anti-immigrant law passed by the Arizona legislature, which requires police to attempt to determine the immigration status of anyone they encounter as part of a “lawful contact.” In any case, right-wing websites are celebrating Davis’ armed border patrol. The neo-Nazi website Stormfront calls it, “[m]ore good news out of Arizona!” “
Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer signed today what is now the most punitive and sweeping anti-immigrant state law in the nation. This law’s full effects will not be measurable for months to come, but it is already clear that it will be challenged in court because it denies rights guaranteed in the U.S. Constitution. And until the legal issues are settled, the new law will have a detrimental effect on Arizona’s economy, as well as city and state budgets.
President Obama on Friday strongly criticized restrictive immigration legislation pending in Arizona, calling for a federal overhaul of the nation’s laws instead.
Speaking at a naturalization ceremony for 24 active duty service members in the Rose Garden, Mr. Obama said that failure to enact immigration reforms would open the door to “irresponsibility by others.”
The “others” he cited in this case apparently referred to state lawmakers in Arizona, who have approved an immigration bill, which, if enacted, would require the police to ask people about their immigration status if officers have any reason to suspect that they’re in the country illegally. The state Legislature sent the bill to Gov. Jan Brewer, who hasn’t indicated publicly whether she will sign it.
Mr. Obama said the Arizona bill threatens “to undermine basic notions of fairness that we cherish as Americans, as well as the trust between police and our communities that is so crucial to keeping us safe.”
He also said that he is monitoring the Arizona bill for civil rights and other implications.
“If we continue to fail to act at a federal level, we will continue to see misguided efforts opening up around the country,” Mr. Obama said.
In his remarks, the president didn’t offer a timetable for trying to pursue an overhaul of immigration laws in Congress.
Dem Rep Raul Grijalva is closing two district offices in Arizona after a man threatened to kill his staff over immigration, Grijalva spokesman Adam Sarvana confirms.
“Tuscon staff answered two calls,” Sarvana says. “It was the same guy. He threatened to blow everyone’s brains out in the Tuscon office.”
That wasn’t all. “He then said he was going to the border to shoot any Mexicans he was going to come across,” Sarvana says. “So there are police at the Tuscon office right now.” Sarvana adds that Grijalva is closing another office in Yuma as a precaution.
Sarvana adds that there have been no shortage of racist calls, too. “They’ve openly been pretty ugly,” he says. “One said, `Send that tortilla-eating wetback back to Mexico.’”

I think this is typical from the Minuteman and other anti-immigration people. I grew up in California not far from the Arizona border; threatening to kill people is a pretty normal Pavlovian response for the angry white gun-toters. I think it’s the dry heat.

I lived in the Tucson area for most of my life and I don’t remember things getting near this crazy, ever. Then again, much of the anti-immigration hatred has escalated since I moved to another state in ‘94. Most of the state was always pretty conservative, but this is nearing violent hysteria. ~whyinthehell
