Court Rules US Taxpayers, Not BP Or Transocean, Are Liable For Gulf Oil Spill Clean Up Costs

US District court has dismissed over 100,000 lawsuits brought against BP And Transocean to pay for oil spill clean up costs and environmental damages caused to the Gulf of Mexico from the BP Gulf Oil Spill. The court ruled that injury stopped the moment the well was sealed and the Federal Government, aka The US Taxpayer, is now liable for clean up costs along with any damages caused by deficiencies of the cleanup of the Gulf Of Mexico.

The US District Courts have ruled that since oil is no longer flowing from the Macando Well BP and Transocean are not liable for cleanup costs and damages from the BP Gulf Oil Spill since the “well has already been sealed and the injury has already been committed”.

In the ruling the court goes on note that Federal Government is in charge of the oil spill clean up efforts. Thus any damages related to the cleanup are now the burden of the Federal Government, meaning the US Taxpayer.

The ruling means that Taxpayers are not only liable for the clean up of the BP Gulf Oil Spill but it also means that any damages caused by deficiencies of the clean up in the Gulf is now also the responsibility of the US Taxpayer.

private profits / public liabilities

this is another horrific example of the corporatist state shielding it’s masters from taking any responsibility for their actions and shifting the weight of private externalities onto the public charge.

this is the face of corporatism!

shit ain’t even surprising anymore!

So why do I still, in my head, see and hear Obama on my TV machine, insisting that BP would pay for all damage??  Oh…right…it’s all in my head…how stupid of me.  ~whyinthehell

Five-year drilling plan, no new offshore drilling will be allowed off the Atlantic and Pacific coasts or in the Eastern Gulf of Mexico

From an email I received from Oceana:

Today, Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar announced that in the new five-year drilling plan, no new offshore drilling will be allowed off the Atlantic and Pacific coasts or in the Eastern Gulf of Mexico.

The Administration had previously indicated support for exploration in the Atlantic Ocean, as well as in the Eastern Gulf. However, they now proposed a 5 year ban on new drilling. Plus, they announced the start of a new process to reconsider drilling in the Arctic’s Beaufort Sea, building on President Obama’s commitment to science and preparedness.

(Emphasis mine. Wtf is a “new process to reconsider…”? I guess I should just be happy about the good news part of this.)

These images are unbelievable.

Let me repeat: you are drilling the world’s deepest oil well, which requires some very specialized technology, yet from a safety and risk standpoint you acted as if this was just any ol’ offshore well. And you claim that you didn’t put “blowout preventers” on these wells because an accident like what we’re seeing “seemed inconceivable”. I repeat: You are doing something that has never been done before and yet in your brilliance an accident was “inconceivable.
